SURFACE DESIGN SHOW 2025: EXPLORING THE LATEST SURFACE DESIGN MATERIALS

I had the pleasure of attending one of my favourite UK interior design shows earlier this week. The Surface Design Show is always worth a visit. I try to attend the fair every year for inspiration, trends and trade contacts. There are always new innovations in surface materials, and this is where you will find them. It’s also a great place to network. I loved chatting with all the exhibitors and finding out what’s new and exciting in the world of surface design.

NATURAL MATERIALS

Natural materials are definitely still trending in surface design. Thanks to the growing emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendliness, leading designers are aiming to incorporate materials like wood, stone, cork, and natural fibers. UK-based supplier Indigenous is passionate about natural materials and sources their products with environmental impact in mind. I love the rugged and organic look of this washbasin. It is the perfect example of the modern luxury trend that is so popular right now.

3D WALL PANELS

3D wall panels are becoming increasingly popular thanks to new sustainable materials and paintable finishes. And we love the drama they bring to a room, don’t we? 3D Wall Panels Italia creates innovative designs that bring materials to life. Their work focuses on both interior and exterior spaces, and their team oversees each project from research to installation. I won’t lie; the floral pattern caught my attention. I’d love to see more 3D walls with patterns in the future.

CUSTOM TILES

Custom tiles are a great way to add a personal touch and let your creativity shine through. DC Custom Tiles use a patented, innovative printing technology that ensures a seamless finish with vibrant colours. They’ve had some pretty prestigious clients and were kind enough to show me some of their current and past projects (I won’t name them, but one was a huge water park in Florida!) They are more than happy to take on smaller jobs as well. Can you imagine creating your own custom tile for your kitchen or bathroom? It doesn’t get much more bespoke than that, does it?

100% CUSTOMISABLE CARPETS & RUGS

Customisation seems to be the buzzword of the moment, and many brands are now able to offer this to their customers at an affordable price. I love a luxurious rug, but what’s even better is a completely bespoke rug made from natural materials. From silk to outdoor materials, Limited Edition rugs have got it covered. I loved the lustre of their silk rugs, but what really stood out for me was the fact that they are so customisable. You can create your own patterns, colours, shapes (I love an irregular rug!) and material combinations. Anything is possible, you just have to think it!

BREATHABLE AIR CLEANING PAINTS

Graphenstone was a new discovery for me. I’m always interested to know any new developments and brands in the paints sector. These paints look and feel very similar to limestone paints but are way more durable and breathable. You wouldn’t want to put limestone paint in a high-traffic area, but it’s not a problem with these paints. They are very hard-wearing, and the advanced mineral formulation means that they are toxin-free and good for people suffering from chemical intolerance. The natural elements in the paint help purify the air whilst being washable and hardwearing. For someone who suffers from multiple allergies, this sounds almost too good to be true. And you can create a proper limewash finish, provided you use the right technique.

LIVING WALLS

Living walls have been growing in popularity for some time. There has been a huge shift towards incorporating living greenery into our homes and workplaces as part of biophilic design. Walls of Eden promises to improve air quality, reduce stress and increase productivity. Installation is also a breeze thanks to the modular panels. The moss itself requires no watering or direct sunlight, and its many health benefits make it a winner for living walls.

CHAIN SCREENS & DIVIDERS

Sway Screens have come up with a clever and decorative way to keep flies, bugs and other insects out of doors and windows. The custom-made aluminium chain screens are both decorative and functional. They can be used as door screens, window screens, room dividers, wall coverings and architectural and interior design features. The chain chandeliers make a stunning design feature, don’t you think? And what a clever and stylish way of keeping the flies out.

That’s it, guys. I hope you’ve been inspired by these new surface trends and that they’ve given you some food for thought for your upcoming projects.
