Linen Lighting: The Soft New Trend That’s Made for Scandinavian Interiors

Linen lampshades are having a moment, and I’m all for it. We’ve all seen linen lighting in more traditional interiors; they’re a classic, after all. Depending on the fabric, style and shape, they can also add a lovely touch to modern homes. There is currently a huge trend for texture and warmth in interiors, and we are seeing a lot more soft fabrics, especially in lighting design. Rattan, linen, and wool are all gaining popularity, which is great news for anyone wanting to make their autumn decor more cosy. I even noticed this at my recent hotel stay in Helsinki, where they had table and ceiling lights with a gorgeous wave linen detail. It’s exactly the type of soft Scandi minimalism that I’m loving right now.

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of my favourite linen lamps.

WAVES, PLEATS AND RIBBED EDGES

Organic shapes inspired by nature are in demand at the moment. These silhouettes provide a much-needed sense of calm and comfort in our busy lives.. I’m loving the pleated, ruffled and wavy lampshade designs that seem to be everywhere right now.  These irregular designs complement both modern and vintage furniture beautifully, whilst adding interest and flair to interior schemes. I love the natural feel of this wooden floor lamp with the wave shade. The contrasting colours and textures bring warmth and sophistication to minimalist interiors. And let’s be honest, there is no better way to illuminate your space than with a light that casts beautiful wavy patterns on the walls.

MIX TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY

As you know, I love mixing old and new in our traditional 1920s house. It’s an outdated way of thinking to believe that you have to stick to one particular decorating style. A collective mix makes the result much more interesting and quirky. For example, I’ve paired these traditional candle chandelier shades with a contemporary sofa and decor. I love the simple design, which complements the original wooden beams perfectly, creating a period look.

This Linen Wave Pendant Light is a striking centrepiece crafted from hand-pleated natural linen, radiating a golden warmth that softens every corner of your space. The rustic lamp design looks ideal in an older, cottage-style house like this, and the rugged texture of the walls and beams creates an atmosphere of understated elegance — the perfect blend of rustic charm and refined minimalism.

NEUTRAL VS. COLOUR

Although I usually prefer neutral colours for lamp shades, a pop of colour can also work wonders for both traditional and contemporary interiors. To complement the existing colour scheme here, I would opt for deep, earthy colours and avoid lamp shades with too many patterns, as the pleated lampshades provide plenty of texture, allowing the fabric to take centre stage. However, if you prefer a more colourful, eclectic look, a busy pattern might be the right choice. Pick whatever makes you happy!

MIXING LINEN WITH EARTHY TEXTURES

I love combining contrasting materials when decorating, and the same principle applies to lighting. Pairing a natural cork lamp base with a fabric shade allows the texture of the cork to shine through. Similarly, if you have a ruffled linen lampshade, I would pair it with a fairly simple lamp base. This way, the two elements won’t compete for attention, and the overall look will be more balanced. Sticking to a neutral colour palette helps, too.

CUSTOM LIGHTING

One of my all-time favourite lighting pendants is this plaster hanging lantern that  I spotted in the Royal Crescent years ago. The person who designed this space was way ahead of their time. That’s why I take inspiration from luxury hotel design — these spaces have to be extremely functional and last for years. The textured plaster combined with the linen shade gives this lighting fixture an elegant and soft look, blending in seamlessly with the interior. It’s a perfect example of how an industrial pendant light can be transformed into a completely different product by adding a custom lamp shade.

What do you think of the new linen lighting trend? Would you consider using wavy lamp shades for your next decorating project?
