It’s been a while since I’ve shared anything entertaining related here, so I thought I’ll post a few pictures of my husband’s 40th birthday cake. 40 is a huge landmark birthday, so I wanted to make sure that I’d get the right cake to match it. We had some big plans for his birthday that unfortunately had to be postponed due to covid-19. In stead we had a small (social distancing) celebration in our garden. The weather has been amazing lately which definitely helped. We’ve got quite a few celebrations coming up later in the year too which is very exciting.
Why is it so hard to find the perfect cake for your other half? Especially for an important birthday like this. If you’re hoping to find the perfect 40th ‘man cake’ in the supermarket you will probably be disappointed. Unless you’re happy with a chocolate cake (which isn’t really a man cake). So what exactly is a ‘man cake’ anyway? Well, it can be any type of cake that would appeal more to men than women. Something a bit more masculine and manly, I guess. My husband doesn’t like chocolate cakes which made picking the flavour a little challenging. In the end I decided to go with white chocolate and raspberry which I knew he’d be a fan of.
When I started my search for the perfect ‘man cake’ I naturally headed over to Pinterest. It has become my favourite search engine in the last few years or so, especially when it comes to entertaining and food. I searched for words like ‘grown up cakes’, ’40th cake for a man’ and ‘man cake’. I didn’t really know what to expect but I got loads of different ideas from Pinterest. Superman was my husband’s favourite superhero as a child, so I immediately had the theme narrowed down. I loved a few drip cakes too but they were a little bit more me if I’m totally honest. In the end a simple black cake with a gold superman logo stood out for me most. I loved that it was meaningful and stylish. Luckily a friend of mine is a cake maker, so I sent her a picture of my Pinterest cake and she created a cake that was identical to the one I found. It couldn’t have been more perfect!
I didn’t have a lot of time to source cake toppers and tableware so I mainly shopped locally and online. The 40th gold cake topper is from Amazon and all the tableware (cups, plates, straws etc) are from Hobbycraft. They literally opened the day before the birthday which was so handy. I wish I had ordered a personalised topper with his name on but in the end this turned out pretty good too. It was a little challenging to plan a birthday party when so many shops were still closed and most things online were sold out. All the balloons were from Card Factory.
I love how our little celebration turned out, although I’m very much looking forward to celebrating again in a restaurant with family and friends. I’m hoping that things will start to get back to the ‘new normal’ very soon and I’m really looking forward to having 6 weeks off home schooling. I have two exciting collaborations coming up this month as well which I cannot wait to share with you very soon.
PS. I shared this cake on my instagram and insta stories last month and quite a few people thought the icing was liquorice. I wish! Unfortunately that would have been a cake for me (my husband hates liqorice!). I do love that idea but it was just black coloured icing.
Luv the Black cake I am wanting to do the same for my sons 50th and is a superman fan how did you do the gold logo of superman?

It’s cool, isn’t it? I didn’t make the cake myself. I found a similar one on Pinterest and asked the cake maker to make one that was very alike. I think she used some type of edible gold leaf sheets (not totally sure though).
