SUBTLE CHRISTMAS DECORATING IDEAS

It’s so close to December now that I couldn’t help adding some subtle Christmas decorations around the house. We usually wait until the 1st of December but we have lots planned for the next few weeks, plus rules really are for breaking, aren’t they? We are not quite done though. I’ll need to buy more decorations since I’ve got a bigger space to fill now. Pretty much all of the decorations you’ll see here are at least a few years old. I do like to add to my Christmas collection each year. Our Christmas decor hasn’t changed massively over the years. I know what I like and mainly stick with timeless ornaments that last for years to come. However, I am starting to get into a bit quirkier and traditional decorations lately. I love dried fruit ornaments and natural materials like wood and wool. I’ll also add more real foliage closer to Christmas like fresh pine branches and red berries.

Here are my tips for a subtle and festive Christmas home..

If you’re looking for stylish and subtle Christmas decorations, bottle brush Christmas trees are your friend. I love the miniature ones on our dining room side cabinet. Go for different sizes to create a focal point. I also like that the mini trees can be matched to your decor. You can make a statement with them or simply have them complement your existing decor (which is always my preference).

I’m a big fan of Christmas garlands. I would prefer real ones but these faux eucalyptus garlands are the perfect alternative for bringing the outdoors in. The best part is that you can decorate all year round with eucalyptus. Faux eucalyptus garlands look natural and subtle and are the less messy alternative to the real thing. If you like your garland to look a bit fuller, just add different types of fresh greenery and berries to it and soon you won’t be able to tell if it’s real or not.

Christmas decor is simply not complete without Christmas flowers. I always prefer creating my own with the flowers that bring me the most joy. This year I am drawn to country-style seasonal bouquets with a hint of red. I love incorporating my favourite flower (hydrangea) if I can with some eucalyptus, red roses, and freesia. I usually go to my local florist with an idea and tell them my budget. A good florist will be able to swap flowers around that will keep the costs down without sacrificing the size or the aesthetics of the flower arrangement.

I received this Scandi-style ceramic mini house as an early Christmas present and it’s precisely what I’ve been looking for. I love the minimalist look and how it creates a lovely festive feel in the evenings. Perfect for adding that Nordic touch to your decor! Feel free to group different sizes to make a statement. I love that you can use them as part of your autumnal displays too.

Fireplace mantel decorating is one of my favourite things to do this season. This year I wanted to keep it all quite simple and minimal. I have so many garlands dotted around that I felt like less is more in this little nook. The neutral bottle brush trees and the white nutcracker are quite a few years old but it just goes to show how you don’t need to (and shouldn’t!) change your Christmas theme every year, unless you’re looking for a change of course. Sticking to the same festive tones each year is not only more economical but will also help you create a lovely cohesive look throughout the house. If you do fancy a change but don’t want to spend a fortune on new decorations, spray painting or hand painting old ornaments is a wonderful way to bring them back to life.

What is your Christmas decorating style this year?
