This post has been a long time coming, after all, green used to be my favourite colour. In the past two years, I have become very drawn to all things green. Whether it’s interiors, fashion, or accessories, green has become my go-to colour. There is just something very calm and fresh about green which evokes very positive feelings and atmosphere. I’ve been spending more time outdoors this summer, having scenic woodland walks and long country bike rides, which has really opened a whole new world for me. I guess I am trying to illuminate the same positive energy and well-being that nature brings to our home and everyday life. So, I’ve been incorporating greens in a subtle way to bring a sense of relaxation and tranquility to our colour scheme. I see it as neutral, although darker greens can be very impactful.
Here are a few green things I’m loving lately..
HYDRANGEAS
We’ve got to start with flowers because they are the easiest way to add a bit of green to your interior scheme. One of my favorite things about having a good-sized garden is being able to grow your own flowers. We have quite a few hydrangea plants but only the green ones really thrived this year. I’m not sure why. I think we may have cut them back a bit too much last year but hopefully, they’ll come back in full force next year. Now is also the right time to dry your hydrangeas so you can enjoy their beauty all year round. Check out how you can look after fresh-cut hydrangeas here.
GREEN HOMEWARES
I think it all started off with the tree wall mural which totally transformed our dining room. I feel a sense of calm looking at our tree feature wall and how it every time transports me into another world. I picked up the most gorgeous green placemats while in Finland this summer. I love being a hostess and you can simply never have too many placemats, am I right? If you’re visiting Finland, you’ve got the check out Tokmanni. It is equivalent to Primemark for homewares in Finland and I’ve never been able to leave the store empty-handed. They do sell more expensive homewares too, like Iittala, usually at discounted prices. My green placemats were heavily discounted (1 euro each!) so it it would have been kind of rude not to buy them. Of course, I also stocked up on some Havi dinner candles, in light green (obviously).
MY VEGETABLE GARDEN
I wouldn’t say that I’m an expert when it comes to gardening but I am proud to say that I have been solely responsible for the new vegetable garden we built last autumn. I had pretty low expectations as I am a total novice for growing veggies. But to my astonishment, I managed to grow a decent amount of vegetables and herbs. This was my first year growing vegetables and I feel like I have learned so much. Mind you I haven’t done that much research, just googling mainly, so it can be done with very limited knowledge. I only planted vegetables that I knew we would eat and herbs of course (which you can never have too many of). I’ve learned which varieties are easy to grow and which are more challenging. My garlic and asparagus didn’t do too well this year, so I might need to look into those a bit more. It was also a surprise how much water the plants needed (especially during hot days) so we’ve installed a water irrigation system to take care of that.
I never thought I’d enjoy looking after our raised vegetable garden as much as I do. It is so relaxing and therapeutic. And thanks to LightHouse Clothing I have the perfect transitional coat to wear this autumn. The Alicia jacket in brushwood is ideal for pottering around the garden, walks, and more. I love that it’s waterproof, windproof, and short so it doesn’t get in the way of doing things.
GARDEN SHED
We even painted our garden summer house green this spring which has proven to be the best decision ever. We used Ronseal’s Forest Green fence paint which is a deep green with dark undertones. It blends in beautifully with the foliage and I am hoping the wisteria we planted next to it will be draped over it eventually. Sometimes I forget that it’s there that’s just how well it is camouflaged.
Do you find yourself gravitating towards a certain colour?
