Organising Tech At Home: How I Keep Wires and Sockets Out of Sight

How to Hide Home Tech In Your Home Inside Alcoves

There’s nothing more distracting than clutter disrupting an otherwise beautiful space, is there? From day one, my goal has been to seamlessly integrate (or cleverly hide) any visual clutter wherever possible and keep things as organised as I can. My husband’s into DIY, and we’re a tech-loving household, which naturally means cables and connection points everywhere. Since moving in, we’ve come up with some pretty clever ways (if I do say so myself) to conceal wires and sockets so they blend into the overall design. Of course, hiding things is only part of the story—smart organisation matters just as much when it comes to keeping clutter under control, and I’ll talk about that a bit later. At the end of the day, we all want our homes to feel calm, intentional, and free of unnecessary visual chaos, don’t we?

Let’s take a look at some smart ways to hide (or just blend in) all the tech and clutter that comes with it.

Hidden Alcove Storage

Consider hiding your wires and sockets in a built-in alcove. Designing these bespoke alcoves was honestly the most fun part of this room makeover. The choice of materials, paint colour, and brass details all came together to create such a stunning result. I still admire them every day. Of course, the best part is that they neatly conceal our home cinema audio equipment along with all the sockets and cables that come with it. It’s not the cheapest way to hide the mess (we hired a carpenter to build them), but it’s beautiful and definitely worth the investment if you plan to stay in the house long term.

Tidy Up TV Wires

I always wanted a framed TV mounted on the wall, and it goes without saying that hiding the wires was a top priority. Loose cables can really take away from that sleek, art-like vibe you’re going for, while concealing the cables makes the TV feel like a real feature. Whether you’ve gone for a Frame TV that doubles as an art or one that blends in like a mirror, keeping the wires out of sight instantly upgrades it from just a screen to a real design piece. It makes the whole space look cleaner and calmer, allowing the design to truly take centre stage. You wouldn’t believe how many people we’ve fooled with our TV!

Practical Storage for Sockets and Tools

While hiding the mess that comes with tech is important, staying organised matters just as much. A complete socket organiser set is a surprisingly simple way to keep all your DIY bits and tools perfectly in order. They make finding what you need quick and easy—no more digging through a cluttered drawer. Prices range from under £10 for basic plastic trays to over £60 for heavy-duty, magnetic, or modular systems. Features like steel or aluminium construction, magnetic bases, adjustable rails, and labelled slots may cost a bit more, but will last for years. To keep things looking sleek, you can tuck magnetic trays or rail systems inside cabinets, closets, or utility rooms, giving every item its place. Let’s be honest, organisation just makes life easier, doesn’t it?

Built-in Sound System

Inheriting integrated Sonos speakers was such a lucky bonus for us. I absolutely love that they’re built into the ceiling, look subtle, but the sound is very powerful. We have music on pretty much every day. It somehow turns even the most mundane chores into something enjoyable. The Sonos box is neatly tucked away in a cupboard, so it’s completely out of sight, which keeps everything looking clean and uncluttered. Honestly, if we ever moved, I’d absolutely go out of my way to do the same again. It’s one of those small design decisions that makes a big impact, blending style and functionality most effortlessly.

Cable Organiser Storage Boxes

This is such a clever and affordable way to hide the mess that comes with all our home tech. We have plug storage boxes in every room (lots of different colours to suit the decor), and they really do make a huge difference. Not only do they instantly make things look neater, but they also make cleaning so much easier, since you’re not trying to manoeuvre around tangled cords or multiple plugs. Of course, it’s not a perfect solution (the box is still visible), but it’s quick, simple, and won’t break the bank. It’s been an absolute lifesaver in my daughter’s room, where there are constantly multiple plugs and wires everywhere.

On My Wish List

If and when we redo the kitchen, there are a few things I’d love to integrate into the island. Under-cabinet outlets are a must—they keep sockets handy for appliances while keeping counters completely clear. I’d also love a drawer charging station, because right now all our devices end up charging on the counter, which is just so inconvenient and looks messy. The kitchen still looks great, but it’s crazy how much technology has changed in the past ten years. It’s completely transformed the way we think about kitchen storage and clutter, and how the space needs to adapt to our lifestyle. Good design should always make your life easier—not the other way around!
