It’s been a few years since I did our bedroom before & after post so I thought it’s worth sharing with you what we have been up to since. I’ve gone for warmer tones in the bedrooms and I love how upstairs feels so different compared to our downstairs monochrome theme. I’m a terrible sleeper, I really am. It takes me ages to fall asleep, which is why I have gone for warm, soothing colours that hopefully help me to relax and unwind. I draw a lot of inspiration from Style Me Pretty Living, which features some of the most beautiful and chicest bedroom designs I have seen.
Watercolour Wall Art & Cushions
I had been looking for the perfect wall art to go above our bed for quite a while when I stumbled across this tree canvas from Next. I love how it adds a bit of texture and colour to the room and helps bring the whole space together. The soft tones work really well with the warm, neutral colour scheme and create a calming focal point above the bed. I’ve been thinking about framing it in a gold/brass metal frame, as I think it would make it stand out more and add a touch of luxury to the room. I haven’t quite decided yet whether it’s a good idea though. What do you think?
Cushions can really lift the mood in any room. The bedroom is such a cosy place that you should not skimp on the cushions. I like minimalist furniture, but when it comes to soft furnishings in the bedroom, I love warm colours, texture and luxurious materials. I adore velvet cushions because they feel amazing to touch and give a soft, elegant look to the room.
I decided to keep the cushions fairly neutral because I didn’t want the colours to clash with the canvas art above the bed. Instead, I mixed different textures and shades to add interest while keeping the overall look calm and relaxing.
Compact bedside tables
I don’t think I could do without good-sized bedside tables. Scented candles, photo frames and small decorative ornaments look great on them. I’ve been thinking about upgrading our bedside lamps at some point. I’d like larger lamps that would highlight the painting above the bed too. There’s actually a pretty funny story involving our bedside tables. We ordered two white bedside tables, but they delivered one white and one beige (a very subtle difference), and it took us 3 years to notice . Unbelievable, right? It was tricky to notice as the lighting is quite different next to the window and I just thought it made the table appear whiter than the other one. After we spotted the difference, it was all you could see. We ordered them 5 years ago from Paul Simon, which has now closed down, so we weren’t sure if we could still get another one in white. We found an online supplier who still stocks this range, so we got another table in white recently. So now they match, but I still cannot believe I didn’t spot the difference when they were delivered in the first place!
And of course, it’s always useful to have a stylish hanger on the door for hats, robes and anything else that needs a home. I love pieces that are both practical and decorative and this simple addition helps keep the room tidy while adding a contemporary touch. I’m particularly loving hat walls at the moment and would love to create one in the future. I think they add plenty of character to a space and can turn everyday accessories into an interesting design feature.
House Plants
Don’t forget to have plants or flowers in the bedroom. They instantly make a space feel fresher, more inviting and lived-in. Fake ones are absolutely fine too (just invest in good quality varieties that look as realistic as possible). A well-chosen faux plant can add colour and texture without any of the maintenance.
This plant (below) is actually real. It doesn’t need a lot of water, which makes it ideal for someone like me who tends to forget about watering plants. Thankfully, it’s proven to be very forgiving and has survived despite my lack of gardening skills! I love the touch of greenery it brings to the room and how it softens the overall look of the space.
Cube Shelves
Wall-mounted cube shelves are perfect for creating a decorative display in the bedroom. They’re a great way to showcase small accessories, candles, plants and treasured keepsakes without taking up any floor space. I don’t think shelving like this is ideal for storage, though, as it can quickly start to look cluttered if you try to fit too much onto it. I prefer to keep the styling fairly simple and leave a little space between objects so that each piece can stand out. It’s also important to choose accessories that complement the overall colour scheme and feel of the room. By sticking to a similar palette, the shelves become part of the design rather than a distraction, helping create a calm and cohesive look.
Gallery Wall
I’ve always wanted a gallery wall in the bedroom and we used Command picture hanging strips to hang the Ikea RIBBA frames. As someone who loves photography, it felt like the perfect way to display some of our favourite family photos and add a more personal touch to the room. I think incorporating meaningful photographs into your decor helps make a space feel more unique and tells a story that no shop-bought artwork can replicate. All the photos on the gallery wall are black and white, which helps create a cohesive look despite the different images and frame sizes. I also love how the monochrome picture wall contrasts with the warm, neutral tones used throughout the rest of the room. Also, checkout our dining room gallery wall here.
I’m nowhere near finished decorating this room yet. I have to admit, it hasn’t been a priority for me but I’d like to get an arm chair next year to go in the corner opposite the bed. I’m also loving chunky knitted throws at the moment but I’m slightly concerned that my mini-me’s might destroy such a beautiful piece of art in no time. Hence, I haven’t bitten the bullet yet! I’d also like to hang some wall art above our TV. My husband insisted on having a TV in the bedroom, and I know there are plenty of mixed opinions on the subject. Personally, I rarely watch TV in bed, but I don’t actually mind having it there. It’s one of those things I never thought I wanted, but I’ve grown used to it over time.
What’s your preference? Would you have a TV in the bedroom or do you prefer to keep it screen-free? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
