DOMKAPA’S NEW 2023 COLLECTION REVEALED AT MAISON & OBJET

* In partnership with Domkapa.

My favourite Portuguese upholstery brand couldn’t have picked a better time and place to reveal its long-coveted collection. Domkapa, famous for its signature stitching and design techniques, announced its new 2023 collection at the one and only Maison et Objet in Paris last month. And, in typical Domkapa-style, the new collection is dripping in style and comfort only using the highest quality materials. I’ve been working with the brand for the past few months and they never cease to amaze me; the materials, the designs, and the attention to detail are truly exquisite. And I love how each piece in the new collection creates a conversation together, perfectly balancing each other’s beauty and function. I also had a chance to interview their talented design team last month which gave me an insight into their rigorous design process and what’s in store for Domkapa in 2023 and beyond.

The new collection might just be the most creative collection we’ve seen from Domkapa to this date. I also love the earthy colours and the use of natural materials. Picking favourites was tough but here are a few designs that blew me away.

EDWARD SOFA

I have to start with the Edward modular sofa, which is quite possibly the coolest and the most versatile modular sofa I’ve ever laid my eyes on. Modular sofas are having a major comeback now and I couldn’t be any happier about it. Edward is a modular system with a wide range of elements that allows you to create multiple configurations. From straight lines to curved corner combinations, the sky is your limit. I love Edwards’s clean lines and subtle beauty that will go with anything. I especially love it paired with the Alexander armchair. I also like its minimalist design without having to sacrifice comfort. Domkapa has really proven that contemporary sofas can be (and should be) comfortable. But it’s also the innovative accessories that make Edward better than your average modular sofa. My favourite is the removable leather pocket that just hangs off the arm. Perfect solution for keeping your living room tidy!

HENRY BENCH

Benches are very much on trend at the moment. And they are the most innovative and aesthetically pleasing than ever. The Henry bench is a perfect example of a multi-functional bench that will suit most rooms. It comes in two different sizes with a removable leather cushion. I’m a big fan of the weaved fabric with fume-stained ash wood. I just love the drama of two contrasting colours. Benches are used in more ways than you think these days. They make great occasional seating and look absolutely beautiful when added at the end of the bed. Having an upholstered bench just gives you that tailored look that ties the decor together. Contemporary and elegant, the Henry bench is one of a kind and every home should have one.

BOUCLÉ

My love for bouclé is no secret. I’ve been admiring this textured, nubby material for years and finally got to add my very first (but not last) bouclé piece to our home last year. I love the texture and coziness of the fabric and that it feels modern and retro at the same time. Bouclé fabric is very much on trend right now both in fashion and interiors, although I try to steer clear of trends and aim to decorate with longevity in mind. The thing is, I don’t see boucle as a fad.  It’s been around since the 1940s which just goes to show it doesn’t just go out of style. Domkapa’s version of boucle (called Columbia Nata) is such a hard-wearing and exquisite choice for any occasional chair or sofa. I absolutely love the Ruth armchair upholstered in this fabric, although let’s face it, she would look incredible in any fabric.

ACCESSORIES

Domkapa impressed me with their choice of accessories at Maison et Objet. From clever headrests to multifunctional side tables, they had it all covered. The accessories flow so seamlessly with the furniture that it’s clear the designers have thought of everything. One of the biggest selling points of Domkapa is that they listen to their customers and continuously make their products better and more versatile. Having the option to customise accessories also gives you so much more freedom to create your dream interior scheme that will not date. I truly believe that it’s all in the details when it comes to Domkapa’s accessories and designs. The Ada cushion is the perfect example of how mixing different textures can create such a layered, sophisticated look.

STORAGE

I was happy to see so many innovative storage solutions in Domkapa’s new 2023 collection. The Adley pouffe is probably my favourite for so many reasons. I love that it doubles up as additional seating or even as a side table if you add a tray on top. It is available in two sizes to suit all your interior design needs. I also have to give some extra credit to the clever side pocket which provides additional storage for smaller items. The helmand weave in light taupe with Domkapa’s signature double stitching makes the Adley pouffe an excellent choice for both contemporary and traditional homes. It’s so beautiful and compact that it’s the one piece of furniture from the new collection I wouldn’t mind having in multiple colours and textures.

CUSTOMISATION

I think it’s safe to say that Domkapa wouldn’t be the brand it is today if it wasn’t for its endless customisation possibilities. Giving their clients the freedom to create the most tailored and functional upholstery pieces is what high quality furniture is all about. There is no one-size-fits-all in interior design and each home, client, and the project should be looked at as its own entity reflecting the lifestyle of the homeowner. Thanks to customisation, the Portuguese brand really excels in creating timeless designs that can be used for many years and then handed down to the next generation. This is a much more sustainable approach to interior design in a world full of mass-produced furniture. I applaud Domkapa for using natural materials, going bespoke, and supporting local artisans in the manufacturing process, thus paving the way for sustainable furniture and a greener future.
