It has been over a year since we got our Briiv Air Filter. As an allergy sufferer, I was keen to test the most sustainable and chicest air purifier on the market. You can read my detailed review here. But am I still using it one year later, or is it collecting dust in a corner somewhere, I hear you ask. Well, I hope the pictures speak for themselves. And if you follow me on social media you will know that my Briiv hardly ever leaves the dining room sideboard. I do tend to move it to our bedroom (on cleaning days) but most of the time I have it in our large open-plan area, especially now that it is pollen season. Our house and garden are surrounded by beautiful shrubs and mature trees but since most people from our household suffer from seasonal allergies this can be pretty miserable. I also love having our bifolds open on a hot summer’s day, even during the pollen season. Whereas no air purifier can totally eliminate the pollen allergies floating in the air (on your clothes, hair etc) Briiv air filtration system reduces the allergens and can relieve allergy symptoms significantly. I see it as another tool in our arsenal to tackle allergy symptoms and purify the air in the house in sustainable and natural way.
HOW BRIIV CLEANS THE AIR
Briiv uses fully natural materials to clean the air, including micro-structures of dried moss and coconut fibers, hemp, and activated wood carbon which are used to remove toxins and odors from your home. Nano fibres is also used as the last stage to remove any tiny PM2.5 particles. Small but mighty, Briiv will clean a 6 x 6 meters room in about an hour and is as powerful as 3043 medium size houseplants. Impressive, eh? It is also a lot more quiet than you would think. You have four different settings to control the clean air delivery rate based on your needs. The best part is that you can use Briiv either via an app or manually. There is a low humming sound when Briiv is cleaning the air which is ideal if you are sleeping or watching TV. I like to use the ‘1-Hour Mode’ maximum setting when I’m not in the room or if I have to get rid of cooking smells. I find it incredibly easy to use and can tell the difference in the air quality after about 5 minutes.
HOW I USE BRIIV TO CONTROL ALLERGIES
Allergies are a tricky thing. What works for one person may not work for another. But since almost everyone in our house suffers from seasonal allergies, I think I’ve got quite a bit of research to back this one up. During the summer months Briiv doesn’t leave our dining room. The bifolds are almost always open and kids are running in and out. It’s impossible to keep the allergens out. I usually have Briiv on a low setting just before the kids come back from school. It’s so quiet that you won’t notice it being on. After about an hour or two (depending on what the air smells like) I switch it off. I prefer to use the manual control as I don’t always have my phone with me but you could easily set up a cleaning schedule to make it more convenient for you. On cleaning days I use the ‘1-Hour-Mode’ for both upstairs and downstairs. It’s a bit of a faff moving it around but I don’t really mind. Most of the time my Briiv just sits in our dining room and manages to clean the air in our open-plan kitchen, dining room and living room just fine. I tend to close the bifolds when it’s cleaning the air though. I’m not sure if it’s necessary. It just makes more sense to eliminate any more pollen coming into the house. I also suffer from dust mite allergies which is why Briiv is used all year round in our house. There are days I forget to switch it on and it won’t take me that long to notice the difference. I just love the smell of fresh air but who wouldn’t, right?
DOES IT (REALLY) WORK?
Yes! I can smell that the air is cleaner and purer and I sleep significantly better in my bedroom after using it. If there is a lot of dust and/or cooking smells I can tell the difference too. It’s much nicer to use Briiv in the kitchen to get rid of the cooking smells rather than just hide them with a scented candle or a diffuser. The scent it leaves behind is very subtle and pleasant. I’ve also been able to keep my dust mite allergies in check thanks to Briiv. I can breathe so much better and my eyes are no longer itchy. I do take antihistamines too but depending on the severity of your allergies you might not need to. CHANGING THE FILTERS
It’s really important to remember to change your filters regularly in order for your Briiv to work efficiently. The moss and coconut filters are made to last up to twelve months, with the nano matrix filter lasting up to three months. Each 1 year filter pack will have four nano matrix filters so you can swap them out after three months. Don’t forget to clean the dust in your moss filter too. I usually wipe it with a microfiber cloth and use a glass cleaner.
DURABILITY & SUSTAINABILITY
My Briiv still looks the same as the day I got it. I know it’s not the cheapest air purifier out there but it has been good value considering I’ve had it for over a year and it’s used daily. The design is very robust and it is made of durable sustainable and recyclable materials. Briiv uses less plastic than any other air purifier on the market and the parts that are not biodegradable, such as the glass, can be easily recycled. And should you have an accident, Briiv also offers replacement parts which is very nice indeed.
RUNNING COSTS
With energy prices going through the roof, you’ll be pleased to hear that the running costs are low. Based on energy costs in the UK, the estimated electricity spend annually is approximately £3.60/$5. That is pretty amazing, right?
WHAT WOULD I IMPROVE?
In terms of the aesthetics, not much to be honest. Briiv air filter is the most beautiful home gadget in our house and it looks more like a terrarium thanks to the glass top and moss. I would love to see Briiv in a few different colours too and perhaps in smaller sizes to suit different rooms. Of course the beauty of Briiv is that one size can clean any size room, so in many ways I can see how it is more cost effective this way.
Briiv has come a long way since launching its kickstarter campaign in 2020 and I feel immensely proud for being able to support them from the very beginning of their journey. It is easy to see why Briiv has been such a huge success and I hope that they continue to change the world by the power of plants.
