SWITCHING TO AUTUMN MODE

Well autumn is here, whether you like it or not, and although I’m usually more of a summer person, there are few things about autumn and winter that I noticed I have been missing lately. I find myself spending a lot more time indoors during the colder months which is why it’s so important for me to stay warm and cosy. Autumn for me is all about pale colours, natural materials and thicker textiles. You don’t need to go on a massive shopping spree to switch into autumn mode either. You’d be surprised what a difference a new comfy throw, cushion covers and a scented candle will make.

This month Wayfair challenged me (and 9 other bloggers) to style our home with some autumnal colours. Being a Finn and all, I tend to go for light fabrics during the winter months. Keeping the colour palette light helps me to maximise the natural light when the days get shorter as white and pale colours reflect the light around the room. So, I decided to keep everything quite neutral and calm, although I do love accessorising with autumnal colours such as pale yellows and warm metallics.

I don’t think you can ever have too many throws in the house. We use them all the time and my children are quite messy which means they get washed quite a bit. During winter I prefer thick, knitted throws which are warm and add instant texture to the room. I’m so impressed with this light grey pom pom blanket. It’s huge (I mean it would easily cover our entire sofa) and quite heavy which is good if you’re looking for a throw to keep you warm and cosy.

I also like to update my cushions for each season. New cushion covers are a quick and inexpensive way to refresh your existing décor without breaking the bank. I couldn’t resist these adorable pom pom cushion covers. They really are cutest pom pom cushion covers I’ve ever seen. They go perfectly with our new pom pom throw and I just love the design. I also ordered these cushions pads to go with my new cushions covers but if you have old ones that fit even better! I was a little worried my 2 yo daughter would try to remove the small woollen balls but so far so good.

I’m seriously obsessed with trays these days. I use them daily and they’re ideal when you’re sitting on the sofa but you don’t have a coffee table nearby. I’m also a big fan of natural materials, like bamboo, which is why I fell in love with this bamboo serving tray. Natural materials are less processed and better for you and the environment, so what’s not to love?

I’m also obsessed with coasters in case you haven’t noticed. I’m a bit like Monica from friends when it comes to coasters. I dread having water rings on porous surfaces, so I literally use coasters all the time which drives my husband mad sometimes. These hammered copper coasters are top quality and look beautiful on the light wood tray. Honestly, I’m so in love with my new bamboo tray that I’ll be babying it for a while, I think.

I love having fresh flowers in the house. I knew this geometric vase dip-dyed vase would be the perfect addition to our lounge the minute I saw it. It’s quite small so it’s ideal for single roses or branches. But, I must admit, I’m loving the dip dyed effect. It’s very subtle, but chic. It really is the perfect vase to go with the all the neutral accessories.

You probably know this by now, but I’m also a total candle addict. Scented candles always seem to cheer me up no matter how bad my day has been which is why I tend to fill our house with them. The Bordeaux Fig & Vetiver candle is ideal for our small(ish) living room. Ok, I’m not going to lie, the funny quote (There’s nothing better than a friend, unless it a friend with wine) caught my eye initially, but I’ve always loved fig which is why I knew this scent would be one of my favourites. It does smell heavenly. You can smell the scent even before you light the candle which is very promising. However, the scent is definitely not too overpowering. I’d say this candle is ideal for a small or medium sized room but it might get lost in a large open-plan space. It’s subtle but you’ll definitely notice it. I can’t handle strong scents these days so I tend go for scented candles that release subtle fragrances as they gently burn.

I hope I’ve inspired you to get ready for autumn. Remember it doesn’t have to cost the earth to switch to Autumn mode. Just buy yourself a new warm blanket and some scented candles, and anything that will make you feel extra cosy during these colder months. You won’t want to leave your house once you’re finished decorating it, I promise.

Thank you Keira! I find that pale colours work so well with light wood. I think bamboo is my new favourite material 🙂 X
