CHRISTMAS DECOR – WHAT I’M LOVING IN 2024

When it comes to Christmas decorations, I try to keep things as timeless as possible. I mean, nobody wants (or can afford to) change their decorations every year, right? I used to be all about contemporary Christmas, but now I’m loving a mix of contemporary and traditional decor. We have different rooms with different themes and colours, and it works well. I haven’t bought any new ornaments this year. I’ve just repurposed some old things we already had which is so much less wasteful and budget-friendly.

DECORATE THE FRONT DOOR

Let’s start with the front door because we all know that first impressions do matter. Nothing beats a fresh pine wreath in my opinion. I like more traditional wreaths these days and prefer a mix of berries and foliage with them. I don’t want my wreath to be too perfect. I much prefer the ‘thrown together’ look which could insinuate that I could have made it myself. Maybe one day! My top tip is to keep all the fruit and berries for the next year and make Potpourri or decorations out of them. I never throw away the bow either. You just don’t know what it could be used for.

WREATH ON A MIRROR

I love hanging a wreath on a mirror, although you have to consider the proportions. For smaller mirrors, you want to match the entire size of the mirror. Larger mirrors can look very chic with a smaller wreath on the top. I do find that round mirrors work best unless you want to hang a garland over them. I paired our old hanging mirror with a traditional faux wreath and I love the look. The mirror also brings more light into the room, which is nice in the dark winter days.

BOWS AND RIBBONS

I’ve gone a bit ribbon-mad this year. Since I didn’t buy any new decorations, I wanted to reuse what we already had. We had some left over gift ribbon from last year, so I decided to tie them up on the Christmas tree. I love how fun they look! I’d advise you to choose contrasting colours so they stand out from your tree. The red ribbons tend to blend in a little too much, but the white ones really pop.

MIXING TRADITIONAL & CONTEMPORARY

As I said, I like to mix contemporary and traditional Christmas decorations. My Georg Jensen pieces are perfect for Christmas in their simplicity. The timelessness of these pieces works so well with bright colours and textures; like this posentia plant and citrus fruit and pinecones.

I also like to layer Christmas ornaments together for maximum impact. I love the way a simple white plate makes this wooden Christmas tree ornament stand out.

USE A NICE BACKDROP

Think carefully about where to place the tree. I love a nice backdrop behind a Christmas tree, whether it’s wallpaper, fairy lights or matching curtains. The tree will be the focal point, but it’s important that the rest of the room matches it.

LIBERTY ADVENT CALENDAR

On the subject of repurposing, my husband got me an early Christmas present – a Liberty Advent Calendar. I don’t want to spoil the surprises, but this year it’s a mix of cosmetics and homeware (i.e. candles), which is ideal for me. To be honest, I don’t like to try new beauty products (I usually stick to my staples) but the content of the calendar has been very useful so far. Also, the Liberty House box is so adorable that I’ll be using it as a Christmas decoration for years to come.

How will you decorate your home this Christmas?
