HOW TO STYLE THE (IM)PERFECT MESSY BED WITH DUSK

* In collaboration with Dusk.

I know making the perfect bed can seem hard, but it doesn’t have to be. If you’re a perfectionist and expect military-level symmetry, then yes it will take some time and practice. But if you’re going to embrace a more relaxed approach you will find it easy and quick and equally aesthetically pleasing. As you may have guessed, I prefer a more relaxed made-up bed. The main reason is that it saves me time and suits my lifestyle (and I do love the look). Although our bedroom is still very much a work in progress, I am going for a French grandeur mixed with a boho theme which suits a more lived-in look I think. I love using natural materials, texture, and accessories for the wow factor which gives you that perfect unmade look.

Dusk challenged me to style our bed using their beautiful bedding and home accessories. I have bought two bedspreads from Dusk before, so I know that the quality-price ratio is the best you’ll find online. This was my first time testing their duvet and pillow covers though. Honestly, they are as good as the Egyptian cotton ones I spent twice as much on. I wash all my duvet covers in 60 degrees delicate cycle and my Dusk bedding came out perfect and was very easy and quick to iron.

Here are my tips for styling the perfect messy bed.

I love using crisp, white sheets. They remind me of staying in a hotel and feel very calming. I like that they look clean too and that you don’t have to worry about the colour fading. The Girona duvet cover feels very luxurious and looks pretty thanks to the subtle pompom detailing. My husband and I have single duvet covers rather than one super king-size and it is the key to a good night’s sleep (at least for us). It’s very typical to have single duvet covers in the Nordics, so this is something that I have always been accustomed to. We recently bought super king-size pillows, so I was thrilled when I found out that Dusk do the Girona pillow covers in super king too. I am so impressed with the Girona bedding set. It looks elegant and washes beautifully too, which is important to me.

Natural materials are one of the main elements for creating a relaxing bedroom. I’ve always wanted a French wooden bed, not just because of the aesthetics but also because they are easy to hoover underneath. Cotton bedsheets and rattan accessories will also help you to achieve a serene bedroom. We will be replacing the carpet with wooden flooring at some point, as it’s much better if you’re an allergy sufferer like me. Also, don’t just stick to one type of wood. Feel free to mix different types of wood with similar undertones.

I find it hard to unwind sometimes, so it’s super important that my bedroom is calm and relaxing. I prefer neutral, earthy colours as they are not overly stimulating. I do like having a feature wall though. When everything else is kept quite minimal, it’s quite easy to get away with a statement wall. Again, stick with neutral colours and simple patterns to create a harmonious interior scheme. You can use accessories and rustic surfaces if you want to add anything extra.

Don’t forget to accessorise your bedroom, but try not to overdo it (otherwise it will feel too cluttered). A good size lamp, some candles, and a nice wooded breakfast tray is all you need to create that hotel chic feel. The great thing with accessories is that you can change up your scheme a little bit for each season if you wish.

If you’re going for the unmade bed look, don’t forget to layer your bed with bedspreads, cushions, and throws. Adding extra layers makes your bed look more styled and gives the impression that you’ve made a bit of an effort. The Chamonix throw is ideal with our French bed. The classy herringbone pattern and soft wool makes it a very luxurious addition to our bedroom. Your throw doesn’t need to cover the entire bed. I prefer to casually throw it at the bottom of the bed. It doesn’t matter if it’s not perfectly even. It’s not supposed to be. We’re going for a more relaxed look, right? Throw blankets are great when you want to read a book before going to bed and can give you that extra layer of warmth during the winter months.
